This unit is designed to automatically compact soil samples rapidly and produce a uniform degree of compaction. For standard or modified compaction tests with arrangement for 12” and 18” height of drop, the results compare favorably with hand compaction samples. The hammer is lifted from the bottom, so no rod or cable is attached to the end of the hammer. The weight is concentrated at the foot allowing free fall of the hammer. The hammer weight is adjustable from 5.5 lbs. to 10 lbs. to accommodate 4” and 6” molds.
The machine cover is hinged on both sides, and opens from the center both ways. This makes it very easy to remove the hammer from the machine. A safety device can be moved under the hammer opening when the hammer is in the up position. This protects the operator in the event the hammer should drop while working on the mold.
An automatic counter registers the number of blows per compaction and is preset to stop the machine. A start-stop switch controls starting and stopping independently from counter control when desired. A compaction mold is mounted on a round base; the round base rotates automatically with each blow assuring the entire area of the mold is covered during the compaction cycle.
A sector faced hammer is used with 6” diameter molds in order to cover the entire surface.
The basic machine includes 5.5 lb. round hammer and a 5.5 lb. sector faced hammer with a surcharge weight to make a 10 lb. hammer, (1) STCP-5A1 4" standard mold, and (1) STCP-5A3 6" standard mold.
